Excavators from China to Nigeria: Buying Guide

Buying excavators from China to Nigeria starts with the jobs you need to complete, the sites you can access and the attachments the machine must support.

A machine described as “20 ton” does not automatically meet your digging, lifting, transport or service requirements. The useful quotation identifies the exact configuration and proves its suitability for your intended work.

This guide covers buying new excavators for Nigerian contractors, equipment-hire businesses and other commercial users. It explains how to compare specifications, verify suppliers, arrange inspection and budget for the complete delivered package.

1. What size and configuration suit your jobs? #

Write a job brief before asking suppliers to recommend a model. Include typical tasks, site access, ground conditions, required working range, transport arrangements and expected operating schedule.

A confined building plot in Lagos and a bulk earthmoving project outside Abuja may require different equipment and logistics.

Request written specifications covering:

SANY's excavator range presents operating weight, bucket capacity, engine power and boom information separately. Compare those fields for the exact model and configuration offered.

Check the complete working envelope. Kubota's selection guidance discusses machine size, access and tail-swing configurations. Reduced or zero tail swing does not remove the need to assess the front attachment and working area.

Have a competent site or equipment adviser assess ground conditions and access. A ground-pressure figure alone does not establish suitability for a particular site.

Where long reach is required, request the manufacturer's approved configuration and performance information. SANY's long-reach specification illustrates why boom, arm, counterweight and undercarriage details matter together.

2. How do you check attachments and lifting requirements? #

Itemise every bucket, breaker, grapple, auger, coupler or other attachment you intend to use. Obtain written compatibility confirmation from the relevant manufacturers.

For each attachment, confirm:

Caterpillar's attachment guidance emphasises matching hydraulic capabilities to the tool. A seller's statement that the machine has “hammer piping” does not define every attachment requirement.

Have competent personnel verify and commission the complete attachment installation. Confirm what is included in the quotation and who resolves compatibility problems.

Operating weight is not lifting capacity. A machine's weight class should not be interpreted as the mass it can safely hoist.

Caterpillar's lifting guidance explains that capacity depends on factors including load position and machine configuration. Request the current manufacturer's lifting charts for the actual machine, attachments and setup.

If lifting forms part of your intended work, have a competent lifting specialist assess the required equipment and planning. Do not accept a general tonnage label or bucket-force figure as a substitute for that assessment.

3. What should the quotation and supplier checks cover? #

Request an itemised quotation naming the model, engine variant, manufacturing year, condition, included equipment and complete specification.

Record the boom and arm, track configuration, bucket, coupler, auxiliary hydraulics, cab equipment and any optional systems. Photographs of a machine with extra attachments do not establish that those items are included.

Verify the seller's legal name, business address, manufacturing or dealership relationship and bank beneficiary. Use the Chinese supplier verification checklist before paying a deposit.

If the seller claims manufacturer authorisation, verify it through independently obtained manufacturer contact details. Confirm who honours the warranty and provides support for a privately imported unit in Nigeria.

Put new-unit status in writing. Agree the required condition, identification records and supporting factory documents. Record machine and engine serial numbers when allocated.

Ask for commissioning and meter records and explanations of any discrepancies. A fresh paint finish or an unexplained meter reading does not establish manufacturing history.

Include manuals, tools, starter service items, export preparation, inspection, commissioning and operator training in the agreed scope. Name the company responsible for each part of the package.

4. What should inspection and acceptance testing prove? #

Agree the inspection plan and acceptance criteria before the supplier prepares the machine. Identify the technical qualifications needed for the mechanical and functional checks.

The checklist should cover:

Arrange pre-shipment inspection in China against the complete purchase scope. Define the demonstration conditions, technical checks and evidence required.

A short demonstration video does not establish sustained job performance or the condition of every major component. Have a qualified inspector document the agreed checks and any limitations.

Where a job-performance guarantee matters, define the task, material, measurement method and test conditions with the supplier and your adviser.

Keep the accepted machine identification consistent across inspection records, invoice, packing information and loading evidence. Agree how serial-number changes or equipment substitutions require your written approval.

Specify remedies for missing equipment, failed tests or specification differences before payment stages become due. Arrange documented commissioning and handover by competent personnel after delivery.

5. How do you plan parts support and operating costs? #

For excavators from China to Nigeria, assess support for the exact engine, hydraulic system and machine configuration you are buying.

Request a parts catalogue, maintenance schedule and recommended starter service package. Identify filters, seals, wear parts and other items by part number.

The spare parts sourcing guide explains why matching identification details matters when ordering replacements.

Confirm stock, workshop capability and response arrangements with the actual Nigerian support provider. Agree how specialist repairs, diagnostics and overseas parts supply will be handled.

Have the manufacturer confirm fuel, lubricants, diagnostic tools and service requirements for the supplied engine variant. Get warranty exclusions, labour charges, travel responsibilities and claim freight costs in writing.

Separate availability from billable work. A machine at a site for a full day may have fewer productive or chargeable hours, depending on the contract and working conditions.

Fictional utilisation example: five paid hours per day over 20 working days gives 100 billable hours.

If a fictional monthly budget contains ₦4,500,000 in specified operating and ownership costs, allocating those costs over 100 billable hours gives ₦45,000 per billable hour.

These invented figures illustrate arithmetic, not Nigerian hire rates or a profit forecast. Define what the budget includes and add omitted costs before setting a commercial price.

Account for fuel, operators, servicing, repairs, financing, insurance, mobilisation, storage, administration and downtime. If quoting by completed volume or task, agree the measurement basis and job conditions separately.

6. How do you plan shipping and Nigerian clearance? #

Obtain final transport dimensions, gross weights and the packing or securing arrangement for the complete shipment. Include detached attachments, counterweights, tools, spares and other separate items where applicable.

Agree any disassembly, transport preparation and reassembly with the manufacturer. Identify who performs the work, supplies instructions and completes commissioning.

Fictional packing example:

This is a volume calculation, not a freight quotation or proof of container fit. Weight, door openings, securing points, lifting arrangements and handling requirements also affect the suitable shipping method.

Have the forwarder confirm route and carrier acceptance using the final machine details. Agree loading evidence and requirements for fluids, batteries and export preparation.

Budget for port-to-site delivery, unloading and access in Nigeria. A low-loader quotation should match the machine and the actual delivery route.

Use the landed cost guide to combine purchase price, attachments, inspection, export costs, freight, insurance and assessed import charges. Add commissioning, initial spares and working capital.

Confirm the import route before shipment. Give SON and your licensed customs agent the equipment specifications, condition, intended use, importer details and complete shipment schedule.

SON's import permit guidance makes approval dependent on evaluation. Its National Single Window notice explains the relevant processing and certificate activation arrangements.

Use the SONCAP requirements guide as background, then confirm the route for the exact shipment.

Request a written assessment of classification, duties, taxes and other charges. Agree the required commercial, shipping and regulatory documents before the machine leaves China.

7. What else do Nigerian excavator buyers ask? #

How much does an excavator from China cost in Nigeria? #

Request comparable, dated quotations for the same model, condition, engine, attachments and service package. Separate machine price from freight, assessed import charges, local delivery, commissioning and initial running costs.

Should I buy a mini excavator or a larger machine? #

Compare your tasks, working range, site access, ground conditions and transport plan. Have a competent equipment adviser assess the proposed configuration. A larger machine is not automatically the most useful choice for every job.

Can a 20-ton excavator lift 20 tonnes? #

The weight class does not state lifting capacity. Obtain the current manufacturer's charts for the exact configuration and have a competent lifting specialist assess the intended task.

Does a breaker come with the excavator? #

Only if the agreed scope includes it. Itemise the attachment, mounting, hydraulic equipment, controls, compatibility confirmation, commissioning and price.

Are long-reach attachments a simple upgrade? #

Do not assume that they are. Obtain the manufacturer's approved configuration, required components and revised performance information. Have the complete proposed setup assessed before ordering.

Can I import a used excavator instead? #

This guide covers new machines. Confirm current eligibility, condition requirements, documentation and clearance arrangements before ordering used or refurbished equipment. Arrange a separate condition assessment with suitably qualified personnel.

What should I send ChinaBridge for a quotation? #

Send your job descriptions, site locations, access limits, ground conditions, working-range requirements, intended attachments, operating schedule, transport plan, support needs and budget.

Request an itemised machine package, technical specifications, attachment confirmation, inspection plan, warranty and parts scope, commissioning proposal and final shipping details.

Before paying for excavators from China to Nigeria, put specifications, acceptance tests, remedies, payment stages and delivery terms in a written purchase order.
