Certificate of Origin vs CCVO: Nigeria Import Guide

Certificate of origin vs CCVO: the names can cause confusion when a Nigerian bank, supplier or clearing agent asks for import documents.

A certificate of origin concerns where goods originate. CCVO means Combined Certificate of Value and Origin, bringing value and origin declarations together.

For a China-to-Nigeria purchase, establish the accepted document, required details and issuing arrangements before the supplier finalises the paperwork.

This guide was checked on 27 October 2026. No shipment document was authenticated and no determination of a particular product's origin was made.

Certificate of origin vs CCVO: what do the names mean? #

A certificate of origin provides information about the origin of goods. Its purpose differs from the commercial invoice, which records the commercial transaction.

A combined document includes both value and origin information.

For illustration, a Form C16 example hosted by Nigeria's embassy in Lisbon contains separate value and origin declarations, alongside invoice and shipment details.

That example explains the combined format. It does not establish which version your current shipment must use.

Do not assume that two documents become interchangeable because their titles contain “origin”. Ask what the receiving institution requires.

Origin paperwork also has a different purpose from product-compliance documentation. Our SONCAP guide explains that separate process where applicable.

Why do Nigerian references use different document names? #

The Nigeria Trade Information Portal's import checklist, checked for this guide, includes CCVO.

A revised import-document list in the CBN's published rulebook compilation uses Certificate of Origin.

These references do not give you permission to rename a document or choose a format without checking the requirements for your file.

Ask your authorised dealer bank and clearing team to confirm:

Keep the response with the order documents. If instructions differ, request clarification before final documents are issued.

Our Form M guide explains the wider import-document process. Use the current checklist supplied for your transaction.

Who should arrange the paperwork in China? #

Raise the requirement with the supplier or exporter early. Establish who has the information and authority to make the relevant declarations and who will arrange any required certification.

Ask the exporter to identify the document type, issuing route, expected preparation time and charges.

CCPIT has published information about companies applying for its certificates of origin through China's International Trade Single Window.

That is a reference for an exporter-side application route, not proof that a particular document or issuer meets your Nigerian file's requirements.

Confirm the current procedure with the issuing body where needed. An old announcement does not establish today's fee or turnaround time.

Send the supplier the accepted requirements and ask for a draft for checking before final issuance, where that process allows.

Use the proforma-invoice guide to establish the order's basic commercial details before shipment documents are finalised.

Which details should agree across the shipment records? #

Compare the origin document with the final invoice, packing information, import references and transport record.

Check relevant fields such as:

Not every form contains every field. Check what belongs on the accepted document rather than inserting information into an unsuitable template.

Different parties may legitimately appear as manufacturer, exporter or supplier. Obtain an explanation and supporting records where necessary instead of forcing names to match inaccurately.

Our bill-of-lading guide explains transport-document checks.

Country of supply and country of origin also need separate attention. A supplier's address or loading port alone does not establish the goods' origin.

The World Customs Organization's origin guidance explains that origin depends on applicable rules. Ask the relevant Customs authority when a determination is unclear.

What if the shipment quantity or value changes? #

Notify the supplier, bank and clearing team before relying on outdated documents.

Consider this fictional order:

Twenty units are not being shipped. The difference in this goods-subtotal example is US$40.

The example excludes freight and other amounts. It is not a Customs valuation or an instruction to change every document automatically.

Ask which documents need correction, reissue or a formal amendment. Record how the supplier handles the unshipped quantity and any associated payment adjustment.

Do not leave conflicting quantities unexplained across the final records. Equally, do not invent matching figures simply to make a file look consistent.

If a certified document has already been issued, ask the issuer about its correction procedure. Editing a finished certificate yourself does not establish a valid amendment.

How should you request and keep the accepted version? #

Send the supplier a clear request tied to the order reference.

You can adapt this message:

Hello. For order [reference], our bank and clearing team require [exact document name and accepted format]. Please confirm who will prepare it, the issuing or certification route, required information, preparation time and charges.

Please send a draft for checking where available. The final document should reflect the actual shipment and agreed supporting records. Tell us before issuance if the quantities, values, exporter details or origin information differ from the order.

Keep the accepted checklist, draft comments, issued version and any amendments together. Label superseded versions clearly so they are not submitted by mistake.

A clearing-agent selection checklist helps you establish who is checking the file and which services are included.

For ChinaBridge Global assistance with supplier-document coordination, send the product details, supplier information, shipping plan and the requirements received from your bank or clearing team. Agree the service scope and fees before work begins.

What else do Nigerian importers ask about these documents? #

Which should I request: certificate of origin vs CCVO? #

Obtain the exact document requirements for your shipment from the bank and clearing team. Official references use both labels, so confirm the accepted format and issuing arrangements before asking the supplier to prepare it.

Do I automatically need both documents? #

Do not order duplicates simply because the names differ. Ask whether one accepted document meets the requirement or whether separate documents are needed for distinct purposes.

Is a certificate of origin the same as a commercial invoice? #

They have different purposes. A combined format may contain invoice and value information, but that does not establish that a separate invoice requirement has been satisfied.

Does shipping from China prove Chinese origin? #

The dispatch location alone does not establish origin. Obtain the appropriate supporting information and apply the relevant origin rules, particularly where production involves more than one country.

Will an origin certificate automatically reduce my import duty? #

An origin document alone does not establish tariff preference. Preferential treatment depends on the applicable arrangement, product and origin requirements. Confirm eligibility rather than assuming a certificate guarantees lower duty.

Can I change the details on a certificate PDF? #

Ask the issuing party about corrections or reissue. A self-edited PDF does not establish that the issuer has approved the change.

Must every document carry an embassy stamp? #

Confirm the authentication required for your specific document and transaction. Do not assume a universal embassy-stamping requirement or pay for an unspecified “certificate stamp” without establishing what is needed.
