Bank Account in China: Guide for Nigerian Visitors

A bank account in China can be useful for a Nigerian visitor who needs local banking services. Start by asking a bank branch to confirm the requirements for your nationality, visa and intended use before planning around an account.

The account must also provide the functions you need. A debit card, mobile-banking access and permission for a particular transfer are separate questions to clarify.

This guide was checked on 27 October 2026. It covers preparing for a personal-account application; no Nigerian applicant, bank approval, fee quote or transfer was tested.

Can Nigerians open a bank account in China? #

China's published foreign-visitor guidance says foreigners can bring valid documents, including passports, to commercial bank outlets to apply for a bank card.

Bank of China's short-term visitor guide also describes applications by foreign customers presenting passports or other valid identification.

These establish an application route. They do not confirm approval for every Nigerian passport holder, visa category or branch.

Contact the bank with your actual circumstances. Tell it your nationality, visa type, intended stay and the services you need.

If your purpose is ordinary travel spending, compare the available alternatives first. Our WeChat Pay and Alipay guide explains options for Nigerian visitors.

Foreign-card linking remains subject to issuer and platform checks. Opening a local account is not the starting requirement for every visitor's payment plan.

Which documents should you prepare? #

Obtain the branch's current checklist before assembling a file.

Start by asking about:

This is a preparation checklist, not a statement that every item is mandatory at every bank.

Beijing's official application guide explains identity verification and the possibility of additional supporting documents when needed.

Phone requirements deserve attention. HSBC China's visitor instructions refer to real-name authenticated mobile numbers. Confirm the requirement with your chosen bank rather than assuming any number will work.

Use our China SIM guide when planning communications.

If the bank requests a tax-residency declaration, complete it accurately and ask for clarification where needed. Do not guess a tax number or copy another person's answers.

What should you ask the branch before visiting? #

Use official bank contact details and identify the specific city and branch. A general statement about a bank does not confirm which outlet can handle your application.

You can adapt this enquiry:

Hello. I hold a Nigerian passport and will be in [city] on a [visa type] for [intended stay]. I would like to apply for a personal account for [specific purpose]. Can your branch assess this application, and which documents and mobile-number requirements apply?

Please also confirm whether I need an appointment, which account functions may be available, and the applicable fees, initial deposit requirements and expected processing steps.

Ask whether English-language assistance is available. If you need an interpreter, confirm that arrangement before attending.

Describe the purpose honestly. “Daily spending during visits” and “receiving money for a business” are different needs that the bank should understand.

Keep the response and the branch address with your travel plan. Reconfirm any unresolved requirements before setting aside time for the visit.

What happens during the application? #

Follow the branch's instructions for presenting identification, completing forms and explaining the requested services.

HSBC's published visitor process describes appointments followed by identity verification and confirmation of account information at a branch. That is a bank-specific example, not a universal processing timetable.

Before accepting an account, ask the staff to explain:

Distinguish the account number from the card number when receiving instructions. Ask staff which details to use for the transaction you intend.

Check that your name, passport details and contact information have been recorded correctly.

If the application needs further review, ask what remains outstanding and how the bank will contact you. Keep another payment method available while you wait.

Can you use the account to pay Chinese suppliers? #

Explain your proposed supplier transactions to the bank before relying on the account for them. Ask which account type, documentation, currency and transfer functions are appropriate.

Personal-account opening does not establish approval for every business payment or cross-border funding arrangement.

Our supplier-payment guide explains other routes Nigerian importers can assess.

For an intended transfer, keep the supplier's invoice, beneficiary details and agreed payment terms. Our proforma-invoice guide explains what to check.

Ask the bank how funds may be paid into the account, what evidence it requires and how charges apply. A local account does not establish a direct naira-funding facility.

Use our yuan-to-naira guide to understand why a currency quote needs a stated rate and fee breakdown.

Verify the beneficiary independently when details change. Our China payment-scam guide explains that risk.

Beijing's official guidance also prohibits renting, lending, buying or selling bank settlement accounts. Keep control of your own account rather than handing it to a trader to operate.

What should you check before returning to Nigeria? #

Ask how the account will work when you are outside China.

A useful departure checklist is:

Ask the bank to show you the official support route. Keep the branch details and account documents securely.

Before leaving, confirm that the functions approved for you have actually been activated. Follow the bank's instructions for checking access rather than assuming that receiving a card completes every setup step.

For ChinaBridge Global assistance with planning a sourcing trip, send your destination city, travel dates and buying objectives. Banking decisions and account services remain with the bank; agree any trip-support scope and fees separately.

What else do Nigerian visitors ask about banking? #

Can I open a bank account in China from Nigeria? #

This guide covers preparing for an application at a mainland branch. Ask a bank directly about any officially supported remote route for your circumstances. An online appointment is not itself a completed account opening.

Does an M visa guarantee approval? #

Ask the branch to assess your actual visa and intended use. General foreign-visitor guidance does not establish automatic approval for every M-visa holder.

Will every bank ask for the same documents? #

Obtain the checklist for the bank and account you want. Supporting documents and service requirements should be confirmed before visiting, particularly when you have limited time in China.

Do I need to open a Chinese company first? #

Ask which personal-account services are available for your situation. A personal application is different from opening an account for a company; this guide does not cover company incorporation or corporate banking.

Will I receive the account immediately? #

Request the branch's expected process and allow time for verification or additional documents. Do not arrange an urgent supplier payment on the assumption of same-day approval.

Does a Chinese debit card guarantee WeChat or Alipay access? #

Complete the relevant app's identity and card-linking checks. The account, bank card and wallet functions need to be assessed separately; no particular Nigerian applicant's setup was tested for this guide.

Should I pay an agent who guarantees an account? #

Confirm any service directly with the bank. Do not surrender account control or rely on a promise to bypass identity checks. Obtain a clear explanation of any legitimate assistance and its fees.
