RMB vs CNY vs CNH: Guide for Nigerian Buyers

RMB vs CNY vs CNH becomes easier when you separate the currency's name, its official code and the labels used for different markets. For a Nigerian importer, the practical questions are how much you will pay, which currency the payment service uses and what the supplier will receive.

Confirm those amounts before funding a wallet or sending a transfer. A familiar currency label does not explain the complete conversion and fee calculation.

This guide was checked on 26 October 2026. Its figures are illustrations, not live exchange-rate quotations.

1. What do RMB, yuan, CNY and CNH mean? #

RMB is the abbreviation for renminbi, China's currency.

Yuan is the unit used to express an amount. A price of 500 yuan is an amount in renminbi; suppliers commonly write RMB500 or CNY500 when discussing such a price.

CNY is the official ISO currency code for the renminbi. In foreign-exchange discussions, it also commonly identifies the mainland Chinese, or onshore, RMB market.

CNH is a market label for offshore RMB. It helps distinguish RMB traded outside mainland China from the onshore market; it is not a separate country's currency or a separate official ISO currency code.

Standard Chartered's currency explanation makes this distinction between the recognised payment code and the two market environments.

For Nigerian budgeting, start with the actual invoice amount and the payment service's complete quotation. Our yuan-to-naira guide explains the wider rate questions an importer needs to separate.

2. Why can CNY and CNH exchange-rate quotes differ? #

Onshore and offshore RMB operate in different market conditions. The Reserve Bank of Australia's August 2026 analysis describes the parallel markets and controls affecting conversion between them. Bank guidance also explains that their exchange rates can converge or diverge.

This does not mean that CNH is a completely different national currency. It means the market and payment arrangement behind a quotation matter.

Your executable price can also depend on:

Do not take a market-reference rate and assume it is the final price offered for your transaction. Ask for an actual quotation stating the amount debited and the expected net receipt.

Date the quotation and record how long it remains valid. Reconfirm expired terms before paying.

3. Why might a 1688 payment wallet show CNH? #

A practical RMB vs CNY vs CNH example is a payment provider displaying an offshore RMB balance while the supplier's quotation uses yuan or RMB.

WorldFirst's current Africa documentation distinguishes its 1688 products:

These are provider-specific descriptions. Check which option is available for your account, order and checkout before funding anything. Do not assume that every 1688 transaction requires the same currency balance or account-linking steps.

A wallet displaying CNH and a bank instruction displaying CNY can reflect different parts of the payment arrangement. Follow the service's confirmed instructions rather than manually substituting currency labels.

Our Chinese-supplier payment guide covers the broader choice of payment routes and records.

4. What currency should your Chinese supplier's invoice use? #

Agree the invoice currency and exact payable amount with the supplier. If the quotation says only “RMB”, ask the supplier to confirm the currency, total and receiving instructions clearly.

Check:

Our proforma-invoice guide explains the wider document checks.

If a supplier offers a USD alternative, obtain the actual USD total and compare the complete cost of settling each option. Do not change a CNY invoice into a dollar payment using your own assumed conversion without agreement.

Record any revised currency agreement in the order documents. Use the purchase-order guide to connect the payment terms with the goods, quantity and delivery arrangement.

A currency label does not establish that a receiving account belongs to the correct party or that a payment route is suitable for your transaction.

5. How do you compare two payment quotes in naira? #

Compare quotations for the same net amount received by the supplier, with equivalent scope and timing.

The following figures are fictional. Assume both quotations deliver CNY10,000 to the supplier and include all payment charges:

For the second quotation:

Quote A costs ₦5,000 less in this example, despite its higher headline rate. Its effective cost is ₦225.50 per yuan received, compared with ₦226 for Quote B.

The comparison changes if charges are deducted from the supplier's receipt, a funding fee is excluded or the quotations have different conditions. Ask the provider to identify those differences before deciding.

This calculates the payment cost for the assumed invoice. Freight, insurance, import requirements, clearance and Nigerian delivery still belong in your landed-cost calculation.

6. What should you confirm before sending the money? #

Ask the bank or payment provider to reconcile the full transaction:

You can send this message:

“Please quote the total cost for my supplier to receive [AMOUNT/CURRENCY] against invoice [REFERENCE]. I will fund from [CURRENCY/ROUTE]. Confirm the wallet or payment currency, conversion rate, all charges, quotation expiry, expected net receipt and processing requirements. Please identify any amount that may be deducted after I pay.”

Follow the official instructions for the selected service and verify unexpected changes. Our China payment-scam guide covers related checks.

After payment, retain the transaction reference, conversion record, charges and supplier acknowledgement. A provider's submitted or processing status should be distinguished from confirmation that the agreed amount has been received.

If the supplier reports a shortfall, compare the records before paying a second time. Ask the provider and supplier to identify the missing amount and its cause.

7. What else do Nigerian buyers ask about Chinese currency labels? #

Are RMB and yuan the same thing? #

RMB abbreviates the currency's name, renminbi; yuan is the unit used to state an amount. Confirm the written invoice total and payment instructions when a supplier uses either expression informally.

Is CNH a different currency from CNY? #

They refer to the same Chinese currency in different market contexts. CNY is the official currency code; CNH is commonly used to identify offshore RMB. Their market exchange-rate quotations can differ.

Why does my bank show CNY while my wallet shows CNH? #

A bank payment code and a provider's offshore-balance label can serve different purposes. Ask the provider how the balance funds the required supplier payment. Do not alter the instructions merely to make the labels look identical.

Can I pay a 1688 order using USD? #

WorldFirst describes a USD-balance payment option separate from its CNH-based World Pay product. Check your actual checkout and account eligibility, including the amount debited, fees and order amount settled.

Is CNH always cheaper for a Nigerian buyer? #

There is no universal cheaper option. Compare the complete cost of delivering the agreed net amount, using current quotations for your available funding and payment routes. A headline exchange rate alone is insufficient.

What if my supplier writes only RMB on the quotation? #

Ask for clear confirmation of the payable currency, amount and receiving arrangement. Ensure the invoice and order reflect the agreement before paying. Do not assume an alternative dollar amount without the seller's agreement.

What if the supplier receives less than the invoice amount? #

Compare the quoted net receipt with the provider's payment record and the supplier's acknowledgement. Investigate deductions, conversion or amount differences through the responsible parties. Confirm any genuine remaining balance before making another payment.

ChinaBridge can help you organise supplier quotations, invoice details and order records; agree the scope and fees first. Keep your RMB vs CNY vs CNH checks connected to the actual payment instructions and supplier receipt.
