Alipay Not Working in China: Guide for Nigerians

Alipay not working in China? Identify whether the problem is registration, identity verification, card linking, a merchant payment or a transfer before changing your payment plan.

For a Nigerian visitor, these problems need different checks. A phone that cannot receive a verification code is not the same problem as a bank declining a payment.

This guide was checked on 27 October 2026. No account, Nigerian card or transaction was tested. Use the official prompts for your account and ask the issuer or Alipay to investigate unresolved errors.

Alipay not working in China: which step is failing? #

Start with the screen where the process stops. Record the exact message rather than describing every problem as an account block.

Identify the stage:

If the app will not load, check your connection before treating it as a card problem. If it opens normally but rejects one payment, save that payment's details.

For initial setup, use our WeChat Pay and Alipay guide. The steps below focus on diagnosing an existing failure.

Avoid changing several things at once. Keeping a record of the original message and each attempted correction makes a support enquiry more useful.

What if you cannot receive codes or complete verification? #

Check that you entered the telephone number and country code correctly. Then establish which service is supposed to send the code: Alipay, your bank or another verification provider.

A working internet connection does not establish that SMS messages can reach your registered number.

If you use a travel data plan, check how the Nigerian number tied to your bank will remain reachable. Our China SIM guide explains the distinction between travel data and your existing number.

Follow the app's retry instructions. Ask the relevant mobile provider or issuer to investigate a missing message.

For identity checks, use your own accurate details and follow the document instructions inside the official app. Check any requested photograph for clarity and completeness.

If a field or document request is unclear, ask official support. Do not invent a Chinese identity number or use another person's account to bypass the request.

Keep account recovery and payment authorisation separate when explaining the problem.

Card linking requires issuer verification. Beijing's official payment guidance directs users to the payment provider or issuing bank when verification fails.

Check the card details and the payment methods currently offered to your account. Ask your bank whether the attempted transaction is supported and whether further authentication is required.

Alipay's merchant guidance explains that successful card linking does not establish that the card can fund every transaction. Eligibility also involves the issuer, transaction, merchant category and applicable limits.

Before retrying, check:

You can ask the bank:

Please check an attempted Alipay transaction at [date and time] for [amount and currency]. The app shows [message]. Did the issuer decline this request, and what action is required from me?

Our yuan-to-naira guide explains why the app amount and your bank's final currency calculation need separate checking.

What if a QR code or transfer will not work? #

Establish what the transaction actually is. A merchant purchase and a person-to-person transfer are different services.

Alipay+'s official visitor FAQ says international bank cards can fund daily purchases in mainland China. It states that those cards do not support person-to-person transfers or sending and receiving red packets.

A transfer refusal therefore does not, by itself, establish that the card cannot pay an eligible merchant.

Ask the seller to explain the payment request and which merchant payment methods are available. Check the recipient and amount before approving anything.

Do not assume every QR code belongs to the company you intended to pay. Equally, an unsupported code is not enough evidence to accuse someone of fraud.

For commercial inventory, agree an appropriate documented payment route. Our supplier-payment guide explains options Nigerian buyers can assess.

Splitting or relabelling a transaction does not establish that an unsupported payment becomes eligible.

What if your bank shows a debit but payment appears unsuccessful? #

Check the Alipay transaction record and the merchant's order or receipt. Keep the amount, currency, timestamp, merchant name and reference numbers together.

Ask your bank to clarify whether its entry is pending, completed or reversed. Ask Alipay to confirm the payment status on its side.

Do not treat an SMS alert alone as a complete explanation of the transaction. Resolve conflicting records before making the same payment again.

You can adapt this support message:

Hello. Please investigate payment [reference] attempted on [date and time] for [amount and currency] to [merchant]. Alipay shows [status/message], while my bank shows [status]. The merchant reports [result]. Please confirm the transaction's final status and the appropriate next step.

Submit evidence through the official support channel, sharing only the information needed for that case.

If a refund is being processed, ask where it is being returned and how to track it. Do not assume a cancellation message means the money is already available to spend.

The issuer and payment provider must clarify your particular transaction; this guide cannot establish a refund date.

How do you get help and prepare a backup? #

Use customer support reached through the official app or the contact details on the provider's own website. Keep the case reference and the replies.

Avoid sharing your password, card security code or SMS authentication code with someone offering to repair the account.

Our China payment-scam guide explains why an urgent payment problem can become an opportunity for impersonation.

A backup should be a method you can actually use for the purchase. Confirm acceptance with the merchant and approval with the relevant issuer or provider.

For travel around the city, prepare an alternative before relying on a single phone payment. Our Guangzhou transport guide helps you plan the journey.

After resolving the issue, retain the transaction evidence and note which method worked. This is more useful for the next purchase than assuming every future payment will behave identically.

For ChinaBridge Global assistance with a sourcing trip, send your destination, travel dates and buying objectives. Account recovery and bank authorisation remain with the relevant provider; agree any trip-support scope and fees separately.

What else do Nigerian visitors ask about failed payments? #

Why is Alipay not working in China with my Nigerian card? #

Identify the failing stage and exact message. Card linking, issuer approval, merchant eligibility, account verification and the transaction type require different checks. A Nigerian card label alone does not explain every refusal.

Does linking a card mean every payment will succeed? #

A linked card is not a guarantee for every purchase. Check which funding methods the payment screen offers and ask the provider or issuer to explain a particular refusal.

Can I send yuan to a supplier's personal account using an international card? #

Alipay's visitor FAQ excludes person-to-person transfers funded by international cards. Discuss a suitable documented supplier-payment route rather than treating the refusal as a general app fault.

Do I always need a Chinese telephone number? #

Official visitor guidance supports registration using foreign numbers. Check the requirement shown for your account and ensure the registered number can receive any messages required for your particular verification.

Will switching to WeChat Pay solve the problem? #

Only if that transaction and funding method are supported and the relevant checks succeed. An issuer restriction may still need attention even when you change payment apps.

How long will a failed-payment refund take? #

Ask the provider and bank about the actual transaction status and refund route. Processing information for another person's payment does not establish when your funds will become available.

Should I pay someone who promises to remove a restriction? #

Use the official recovery or support process. Do not hand over account control or authentication codes to someone promising to bypass checks.
