Grain Cleaning Machines from China to Nigeria: Guide

Buying grain cleaning machines from China to Nigeria starts with the crop, the buyer’s quality requirements and the volume you can realistically process. A machine that handles maize well may need different screens, settings or equipment to handle sesame or beans.

For grain traders, millers, cooperatives and food processors, the useful purchase is a complete system that produces an agreed grade with manageable grain losses.

1. Why is grain cleaning a relevant import topic for Nigeria now? #

The National Bureau of Statistics recorded ₦126.45 billion of imports from China in the category covering machines for cleaning, sorting or grading seed, grain or dried leguminous vegetables during April–June 2026.

That category appears among the five Chinese product groups shown in Table 5C of the NBS Q2 2026 foreign trade release. It includes several equipment types, rather than basic grain cleaners alone.

This gives the topic a concrete link to recent Nigerian import activity. Your own opportunity still depends on customers, crop supply, equipment performance and total costs.

Possible customers to interview include:

Ask what they currently reject, how much material they handle and whether they would pay for cleaning. Record their required grade, delivery schedule, weighing basis and payment terms.

Use the same demand checks discussed in choosing products to import from China. Obtain credible customer interest before committing to a large line.

2. Which machine solves the quality problem your customers have? #

Start with the unwanted material in the crop. Different separation methods solve different problems.

Screen cleaner: separates material according to relevant dimensions. Suitable screens can help remove oversized and undersized material; an associated air system may remove light impurities.

Destoner: separates suitable dry granular material by density to target heavier foreign material such as stones. It requires assessment against the actual crop and contaminants.

Gravity separator: separates suitable products by density differences. It can serve a different purpose from a basic screen cleaner.

Colour sorter: uses an optical system to identify specified appearance differences and reject selected material. Detection capability depends on the sensors, product and agreed sorting task.

Size grader: separates product into agreed size groups. Grading may support a customer specification even where the crop already appears clean.

Cimbria’s processing equipment overview distinguishes screening, density separation and grading. Bühler’s grain and seed overview also separates mechanical, density and optical sorting stages.

These are technical references, rather than evidence that a particular Chinese supplier offers equivalent performance.

Have a processing specialist identify the required stages. Several machines may be needed, but every extra stage should have a defined job.

3. How should you specify capacity and a complete machine package? #

A headline tonnes-per-hour figure needs conditions. Ask which crop, incoming condition, cleaning task and finished specification produced that figure.

Pre-cleaning capacity and fine-cleaning capacity can differ. The usable output of a line also depends on feeding, conveying, separation, collection and bagging.

Send suppliers a written brief covering:

Request a quotation identifying the cleaner, appropriate screen sets, feeders, elevators or conveyors, separation stages, collection arrangements and controls.

Ask whether the quoted price includes dust collection, ducting, compressed-air equipment where relevant, weighing, bagging, spare parts, installation and training. List every exclusion.

Have qualified engineers review electrical supply, motor starting, guarding, access, dust controls and the proposed layout. Do this before ordering so local preparation forms part of the budget.

For optical equipment, obtain the specified air quality, pressure and flow requirements for professional assessment. A quotation saying “compressor required” leaves important costs unresolved.

This guide covers cleaning food and feed ingredients. Equipment intended for planting seed also needs an agreed seed-quality and germination assessment appropriate to that use.

4. How do you check the supplier and test the actual crop? #

Verify the contracting company, factory relationship and payment beneficiary using a documented Chinese supplier check.

Chinese search terms can help identify candidates: 粮食清理机 for grain cleaning equipment, 去石机 for destoners and 色选机 for colour sorters. Product names alone do not establish suitability.

Agree a professionally supervised trial using representative material. Record where that material came from and how closely it matches what you will process in Nigeria.

The trial record should identify:

Clean-looking output is only one part of acceptance. A machine can reject valuable grain while producing an attractive sample. Examine both accepted and rejected streams.

Agree measurable acceptance criteria with your processing specialist before paying for a trial. For multiple crops, define separate trial conditions and required screen or accessory changes.

Commission quality inspection in China against that written scope. A visual inspection, equipment count and crop-performance trial provide different evidence.

Put correction, repeat-trial and dispatch conditions in the contract. Avoid accepting a promotional video as the entire performance record.

5. What should the business and operating-cost calculation include? #

Before importing grain cleaning machines from China to Nigeria, choose whether you will clean customers’ grain, trade your own cleaned stock or supply equipment to processors.

Each model has different working-capital needs. Buying grain ties up cash in stock; providing a cleaning service requires agreement on weighing, losses, quality and responsibility for rejected material.

Fictional cleaning-job example: a business receives 10,000 kg of grain. After the agreed process, 9,600 kg meets the customer specification and 400 kg remains in combined reject and residue streams.

The rejected material may contain useful grain. It should be examined rather than counted automatically as worthless contamination.

Suppose selected labour, power and consumable costs for that job total ₦192,000:

These invented figures illustrate the calculation. They are not Nigerian market prices, a machine rating, a service charge or a profitability forecast.

The example excludes grain purchase, rent, finance, depreciation, insurance, tax, packaging, delivery and other overheads. Your full costing must include applicable items.

If you charge by incoming weight, calculate your service economics on that basis too. State the billing basis clearly so customers understand how cleaning losses affect the final quantity.

Build conservative bookings around documented customer needs. Include downtime, maintenance, crop changeovers and seasonal gaps when estimating useful working hours.

6. What will shipping, import checks and installation add? #

Obtain a packing list for every machine and accessory. Request external crate dimensions, gross weights, lifting provisions, stackability and the proposed shipping arrangement.

Fictional packed-volume example:

This is a volume calculation only. Weight, packing, non-stackable cargo and container loading can affect the shipping quote. Ask the forwarder to confirm the chargeable basis.

Use the cost-per-CBM guide to compare freight quotations. Separate origin charges, sea freight, destination charges, clearing, inland transport and unloading.

Then prepare a complete landed-cost budget, followed by an installation budget covering site preparation, utilities, commissioning, training and initial spares.

Before shipment, have your licensed clearing agent confirm classification, current charges, Form M documentation and applicable approvals for the exact consignment.

SON’s import-permit guidance describes an evaluated route for eligible importers and uses. Industrial equipment is not automatically exempt; machinery imported for resale must be assessed under the appropriate commercial route.

SON’s March 2026 notice also changes specified permit processing and certificate activation through the National Single Window. Confirm the current workflow before arranging dispatch.

If you will manufacture or pack pre-packaged food, review the applicable NAFDAC facility requirements separately. Buying a machine does not establish approval for your food business.

7. What do Nigerian buyers commonly ask before ordering? #

How much is a grain cleaning machine in Nigeria? #

Obtain comparable quotations for the same crop, accepted output and package. A standalone cleaner, a cleaner with a destoner and a line including optical sorting can have very different total costs.

Is a destoner the same as a colour sorter? #

They use different separation methods. Define the unwanted material first, then have a specialist determine whether density separation, optical sorting or several stages are appropriate.

Can one machine clean maize, beans and sesame? #

Some equipment can handle several crops with suitable configurations. Require crop-specific trials, compatible screens and written changeover requirements before accepting a multi-crop claim.

Will cleaning make mouldy grain safe to sell? #

Do not assume this. WHO identifies mycotoxins as hazards affecting crops including cereals. Have qualified food or feed specialists define sampling, laboratory testing, acceptance and disposal requirements. Appearance alone cannot establish safety.

Does a cleaning line also dry and mill grain? #

Only where separately specified equipment and processes are included. Ask the supplier to mark drying, dehulling, milling, cleaning and bagging responsibilities clearly on the proposed process flow.

Should I choose the highest advertised capacity? #

Compare performance on your actual crop and required grade. Check accepted output, good-grain losses, utilities, handling and customer demand together before choosing a size.

What should I send when requesting a quotation? #

Send your crop brief, representative material details, finished-quality requirements, target workload, site information, delivery location and required package. Use a written purchase order to capture specifications, trials, spares, payment stages and responsibilities.
