Factory or Trading Company in China? Buyer Guide

Choosing a factory or trading company in China starts with your order: what you need made, the quantity, the specifications and who will take responsibility for delivery. Nigerian buyers should check the business behind the quotation and establish where the exact goods will be produced.

A factory label alone cannot tell you whether the supplier suits your order. A transparent trader may offer useful coordination, while a manufacturer may offer closer access to production. Compare the evidence and the full offer.

What is the difference between a factory and a trading company? #

A manufacturer produces goods, although it may buy components or outsource some processes. A trading company sources goods from other businesses and sells them to buyers.

A business can do both: manufacture one product range and trade additional items. Ask about the exact model you intend to order, rather than assuming everything in its catalogue comes from its own production line.

For example, a supplier may make cabinet handles but source the hinges offered alongside them.

If you want a product made to your specifications, use our own-brand goods guide to prepare the design, materials, packaging and approval requirements before discussing production.

Can a supplier badge prove that it is a factory? #

Read the assessment behind the badge. Alibaba’s Verified Supplier guidance includes business type, such as manufacturer, trading company or both, alongside production capabilities and subcontractors. It also makes clear that assessments are conducted by independent third parties.

Check the report’s company name, assessment date, visited address and product categories. Compare those details with the supplier currently quoting for your goods.

Use the report as evidence to investigate. It does not replace checks of your specific order or establish that every listed product is made at the assessed site.

If your shortlist began with a product picture, our 1688 image search guide explains why matching photos still need specification and supplier checks.

How do you check the registered business? #

Before choosing a factory or trading company in China, request the registered Chinese company name, business licence and Unified Social Credit Code. Also ask for the office address and proposed production address.

The European Commission’s China company-search guide explains that China’s official enterprise information system can show registration details, business scope, location and the legal representative.

Use registration information to check identity. Assess actual production separately: a registered company’s existence does not demonstrate its capacity to make your particular order.

Compare the legal entity with the quotation and proposed contract. If another company will invoice you or receive payment, request a documented explanation of the relationship and verify it before proceeding.

Our Chinese supplier verification service can help you investigate the business behind an offer.

What evidence should you request about production? #

Ask the supplier to explain how your product is made and which steps it carries out itself. For cabinet handles, that might include casting, machining, finishing, assembly and packing.

Request a live walkthrough or an independent site assessment showing relevant equipment and processes. Ask where any outsourced work takes place and who checks the result.

SGS describes supplier verification as covering business and production capacity, quality control and other agreed checks. Specify the questions you need answered when commissioning an assessment.

For custom work, also ask who controls tooling, approves design changes and keeps the reference sample. Include those responsibilities and any charges in your written agreement.

Separate this from quality inspection in China of an actual order. Checking a facility’s capability and inspecting the finished goods answer different questions.

Photos, a video call and technical answers help build a picture, but assess them together rather than treating one item as conclusive proof.

Which supplier type suits a Nigerian buyer? #

Consider how the proposed arrangement handles your quantity, product mix, customisation and quality requirements.

An Abuja buyer ordering 200 cabinet handles across several finishes may value a supplier that can coordinate mixed stock and one dispatch. A buyer commissioning 5,000 identical handles needs a clear production plan and repeatable specifications. These are examples; actual order conditions depend on the suppliers.

Ask each candidate for its minimum order quantity, quantity-based prices, sample terms and production time.

Use our supplier negotiation guide to discuss the offer. Compare like-for-like specifications and the same delivery responsibilities.

Then calculate the landed cost from China to Nigeria. Include the goods, delivery within China, sourcing fees where applicable, freight, clearance and delivery in Nigeria. A lower unit quotation may produce a higher total cost.

What warning signs deserve a closer check? #

Ask for clarification when names, addresses or product explanations conflict. Examples include:

A broad catalogue or fluent English does not, by itself, establish whether a business manufactures goods. Focus on evidence relevant to your order.

Arrange samples from China to Nigeria and record the approved specification. Our Chinese supplier scams guide covers further checks before you commit money.

What should you agree before paying a deposit? #

Whether you choose a factory or trading company in China, identify the seller responsible for your order and record the agreement.

Use a purchase order to state the exact goods, quantity, materials, finish, packaging, delivery date and inspection arrangements. Explain how defects, shortages or specification changes will be handled.

Check the proforma invoice against those terms. Agree the deposit and balance conditions, and verify the recipient before using your chosen supplier payment route.

For an Alibaba order, review our Trade Assurance guide for Nigerian buyers and the terms applying to the specific transaction.
