Used iPhones from China: Nigerian Buyer Checklist
Buying used iPhones from China? Check Activation Lock, carrier restrictions, battery health, repair history and supplier terms before shipping to Nigeria.

Used iPhones from China: Nigerian Buyer Checklist
Buying used iPhones from China requires more than checking whether the screen looks clean and the phone switches on. Nigerian buyers should agree the condition, test the actual devices and record what the supplier will do if units fail.
A low quotation can become expensive when carrier restrictions, ownership locks, battery problems or undisclosed repairs appear after delivery.
This checklist was checked on 26 October 2026. Use it alongside our phone sourcing guide for Nigerian buyers when preparing an order.
What should you agree before ordering used iPhones from China? #
Write down the exact model, storage, colour, quantity and accepted condition. Ask the seller to define any grade such as A, A+ or “like new”.
Separate cosmetic condition from functionality. Agree what scratches, dents, replaced parts, battery condition and defects are acceptable.
Ask what work was performed on phones described as refurbished. Request the inspection process and repair disclosures supporting the seller's description.
Also confirm the lawful Nigerian import arrangement before paying. NESREA lists a Used Electrical and Electronic Equipment permit covering handling, imports and exports. Ask the agency what your proposed stock requires.
Our importing phones to Nigeria guide introduces the wider telecommunications requirements. A technical inspection alone does not settle import or network compliance.
Request an identifiable device list for the proposed lot, including model, storage and serial/IMEI references. Keep those records privately with the order so inspected phones can be matched to supplied units.
How do you check Activation Lock and carrier restrictions? #
Activation Lock links a device to its owner's Apple Account through Find My. Apple advises buyers against purchasing an Activation-Locked iPhone.
Arrange for the legitimate seller to complete the required account removal and erasure. With their permission, begin setup and activation to check whether the previous owner's Apple Account is still requested.
If it is, return the device to the seller for legitimate resolution before acceptance. A promise that someone will bypass the lock later should not become your purchasing plan.
A Hello screen indicates erasure; complete the relevant setup checks before treating the phone as ready for use.
Check carrier restrictions separately. Under Settings, open General and About. Apple's guidance says “No SIM restrictions” beside Carrier Lock identifies an unlocked iPhone.
Apple says only the relevant carrier can perform a carrier unlock. Do not treat an uncompleted unlock promise as a working device.
Also inspect Settings for supervision or device-management information. If an organisation's controls or ownership are involved, ask the seller and organisation to resolve them legitimately before acceptance.
Record the findings for each phone. One unlocked demonstration unit does not establish the status of the rest of the lot.
What should battery health and repair history tell you? #
Open the Battery area in Settings and review the available health information. Menu labels and available details vary by model and iOS version.
Record maximum capacity, any service recommendation and relevant messages. On supported newer models, additional information includes cycle count and first-use details.
Agree your buying threshold with a competent technician. A displayed percentage alone does not establish charging performance, ownership status or the condition of the whole phone.
For Parts and Service History, Apple's documented route on iOS 15.2 and later is Settings, General, About. Available parts information depends on the model.
Messages can include:
- Genuine: the repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Used: the part was previously used in another iPhone.
- Unknown: investigate the cause; it can have several explanations.
- Unverified or Finish Repair: obtain a competent assessment of the outstanding issue.
Record what is displayed rather than rewriting every message as “fake part”. Apple lists several reasons for Unknown, including an unverified replacement or a part not working as expected.
The history also has limits: Apple says only the most recent service appears when a part has been serviced repeatedly. Use the record alongside physical and functional checks.
Which functions should the actual phones be tested for? #
Agree a repeatable checklist with the inspecting technician. Test the features relevant to the exact model and your customers' expected use.
Include appropriate checks for:
- Display condition and touch response.
- Cameras and video recording.
- Microphone, speaker and call audio.
- Charging connection and charging behaviour.
- Buttons and vibration.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- SIM/eSIM arrangement and cellular functions.
- Face ID or Touch ID, where fitted.
- Housing, ports and visible damage.
- The agreed battery and repair-history criteria.
Ask the technician to describe the test method and result. “Camera works” should mean more than opening the camera app briefly.
Avoid improvised electrical or battery tests. Have a qualified service provider investigate suspicious battery condition, charging faults or unresolved repair messages.
Confirm the exact regional model and intended Nigerian network arrangements. A carrier-unlocked phone still needs assessment for the service and SIM configuration you intend to use.
Keep the model, test results and device reference together. Match the phone to its agreed accessories and packaging before it is packed for dispatch.
How should samples and batch inspection work together? #
Start with identifiable samples when evaluating a new supplier. Use our samples from China to Nigeria guide to plan the trial and record what is being approved.
Used-phone condition can differ between individual units. Approval of one sample should establish your acceptance criteria rather than automatically approving every phone offered later.
Before paying the balance, agree the inspection scope for the actual lot. Our quality inspection guide helps you define the work.
Ask whether the quoted inspection covers every unit or a stated sample. Record which functions are tested and which devices were examined.
A report on two phones should not be described as a functional check of all twenty.
For failures, agree whether the supplier will replace, repair, remove or refund the affected unit. Require any replacement to be identified and checked before acceptance.
Request final packing records that connect the accepted device list with the shipment. This helps you identify substitutions or shortages when the goods arrive.
Which supplier terms and costs should you settle? #
Put the device specification, condition criteria, test scope and remedy for failures into your purchase order for a Chinese supplier.
Clarify the supplier's claim window, evidence requirements, return address and responsibility for return freight. Ask when that window starts, particularly when international delivery takes time.
You can send this message:
“Please quote [model/storage/quantity] with a device list, written condition grade, battery criteria and repair disclosures. Confirm that accepted phones must complete activation without the previous owner's account and meet our agreed carrier-status requirements.”
“Please confirm the inspection scope, treatment of failed units, claim deadline and who pays return costs. Any replacement must be identified and checked before dispatch.”
Budget beyond the supplier's unit price. Include inspection, shipping, applicable import costs, agreed servicing and your own selling costs.
For illustration, ten accepted phones costing ₦3,000,000 landed plus ₦100,000 servicing total ₦3,100,000, or ₦310,000 each. At a fictional ₦350,000 selling price, another ₦20,000 per phone for selling costs and a warranty allowance leaves ₦20,000 contribution each before other overheads.
These are invented budgeting figures, not current phone prices or a profit forecast.
Declare the devices and batteries accurately to the forwarder. Read shipping batteries from China and obtain acceptance for the actual shipment before dispatch.

What else do Nigerian buyers ask about used iPhones? #
Does Grade A guarantee a fully original phone? #
Ask the supplier to define the grade and disclose repairs. Record separate requirements for appearance, functionality, parts and battery condition.
Does the Hello screen prove all checks have passed? #
No. Arrange activation and the agreed device checks before acceptance. Erasure alone does not establish the phone's full condition.
Does 100% battery health mean the phone is new? #
No. Review repair disclosures, battery information and actual performance alongside the supplier's description of the device.
Does an Unknown message always identify a counterfeit part? #
No. Apple lists several possible causes. Have the specific message and affected function assessed before accepting the phone.
Can Apple remove a carrier restriction for me? #
Apple says only the relevant carrier can unlock the phone. Have the seller resolve that requirement before you accept it as unlocked stock.
Is one tested sample enough for a mixed used-phone lot? #
Use the sample to define expectations, then agree inspection of the actual lot. Record which units and functions the inspection covers.
Should I accept a locked phone because the price is lower? #
Resolve legitimate ownership and carrier issues before acceptance. Compare the cost of usable, agreed-condition stock rather than relying on a future fix.
